What Is an Independent Medical Examination?

Independent Medical Examination is a medical evaluation requested during a workers’ compensation claim to assess an employee’s injury, diagnosis, treatment, work limits, or connection to employment. A physician who is not providing ongoing treatment conducts the examination and prepares findings for the insurer, employer, employee, or legal decision-maker.

How Independent Medical Examination Works

Independent Medical Examination begins when an insurer, employer, employee, or legal representative requests an evaluation. The examining physician reviews relevant medical information, asks about the injury, performs an examination, and considers the employee’s reported symptoms. The physician then prepares a written opinion for the requesting party.

The report may address whether the injury relates to work, whether treatment is reasonable, and what work activities the employee can perform. An Expert Witness may later explain the medical findings if the claim involves a dispute. Medical Records can provide context, but the examining physician’s opinion remains separate from the employee’s ongoing treatment plan.
